5 methods for chiseling off pile heads – which one is the most suitable? After the construction of the foundation piles, the upper sections of the pile heads are removed. This is because, during the pouring of the concrete for the pile body, bubbles and excess slurry within the concrete rise to the top of the pile, resulting in a mixture of slurry and mud in that area. As a result, the strength of the upper sections of the pile heads decreases. To ensure the strength of the entire pile body, it is necessary to remove these upper sections. At present, the technology for removing pile caps is fairly mature. Depending on the equipment used, there are methods such as mechanical impact removal, manual pneumatic chisel removal, ring-cutting method, mechanical compression crushing, and expansion static demolition. The appropriate method should be selected through a comprehensive comparison based on factors such as pile diameter, number of piles, project timeline, and cost. Introduction to pile head removal methods: The mechanical impact removal method involves using an excavator, with a hydraulic crushing head mounted at the end of the excavator’s arm; the crushing force of this head is used to break and remove the pile head section. The manual pneumatic hammer removal method utilizes a pneumatic hammer – a handheld tool powered by compressed air, primarily used for breaking hard materials – to carry out the removal work manually. For small-diameter piles, they are generally removed in their entirety ; For large-diameter piles, the main rebar in the outer reinforcement cage is generally removed first; then horizontal holes are drilled at the point where the pile is to be broken, steel wedges are inserted, and pneumatic hammers are used to create horizontal cracks in those areas. Finally, a crane or similar device is used to lift the entire pile head out. In the circumcision method, marking lines for the chiseling section are drawn on the outside of the pile shaft, and an attached cutting machine is used to cut along these lines, with the cutting depth determined by the measured thickness of the protective layer. After cutting, a ring-shaped groove about 10 cm wide is chiseled out using a pneumatic pick, after which the protective layer is removed in its entirety and the main rebar is stripped; the subsequent construction procedures are the same as those for removal using a manual pneumatic pick. The mechanical extrusion crushing method utilizes specialized crushing equipment; a corresponding circumferential hydraulic crushing device is selected based on the diameter of the pile. Inside the rigid ring of this device, there are arrays of hydraulic jacks equipped with crushing teeth. The equipment is installed at the point where the pile is to be severed, and multiple sets of jacks are used to apply pressure to the sides of the pile, thereby crushing and removing the upper section of the pile. The expansion static removal method involves installing isolation sleeves around the rebar cage in the section of the pile head that needs to be removed, prior to the processing and shaping of the rebar cage inside the pile shaft and before the rebar cage is placed below the pile hole. These sleeves isolate the rebar, thereby eliminating the gripping force exerted by the concrete formed in the pile shaft on the rebar ; At the same time, a horizontal pipe is embedded at the horizontal level of the section where the pile body is removed; one end of this pipe is sealed later, and an expanding agent is poured in through the other end until it fills the space. Under the action of this expansion force, the pile head separates from the pile body.
