Sinochem New Network News: Recently, the Philippines announced its first major natural gas discovery in over a decade off the coast of Palawan Island. The newly discovered MAE-1 well is located about 5 kilometers east of the existing Malapaya gas field, and preliminary assessments indicate that its natural gas geological reserves amount to approximately 98 billion cubic feet. This discovery is crucial for the energy security of the Philippines. For a long time, as the output of its main gas fields declined, the country has become increasingly dependent on imported liquefied natural gas. The new resources are expected to generate around 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to meet the annual energy needs of approximately 5.7 million households. The initial daily production reached 60 million cubic feet, which is comparable to that of the original wells, indicating that this is a high-productivity reservoir. This well also produces high-value condensate, which helps to stabilize power supply and reduce the risk of fuel imports. This discovery is the first milestone of the Phase 4 drilling program for the Malapaya gas field. The Malapaya gas field has always been a pillar of the energy supply in the Philippines, providing fuel for power generation on Luzon Island. As the production of the existing gas fields naturally declines, this new discovery on the eastern side is expected to significantly extend the period during which these gas fields can supply gas to the domestic market. The next step of the project will be to complete the testing of Well Camago-3, and to continue drilling in the Pag-asa exploration area in order to further assess the resource potential of that area.
