As the title suggests, I would like to ask the experts on this forum whether there are any instruments that can quickly determine the moisture content in coking products. We have light tar with a specific gravity lower than that of water, as well as tar with a specific gravity higher than that of water. The method we currently use is the distillation method specified in GB/T2288-2008 for determining the moisture content in coking products; however, sample preparation and testing take relatively long times. Are there any simpler methods or instruments that can enable rapid measurement? (We have tried rapid testing methods such as the calcium carbide reaction method, but the results were not satisfactory.)

Using electrochemical coulometric titration, the measurement can be completed in just a few minutes – such a fast speed is quite impressive, isn’t it? The distillation method also takes no more than 1 hour.
Both the Karl Fischer titration method and the coulometric method are relatively fast; the coulometric method can detect trace amounts as low as less than 100 ppm. Both methods require specialized equipment and reagents, resulting in high costs.
Thank you all for your help. I’ve found a simpler method; it also involves using the Coulomb method for measurement. Given the high water content, direct sampling would result in the waste of a large amount of Karl Fischer reagent, which is not conducive to cost savings. Therefore, an anhydrous liquid that is miscible with water (such as methanol or ethanol) is used for dilution. The water content is determined using a moisture meter, and then the water content is calculated based on the degree of dilution. Although this method is somewhat wasteful in terms of the water-soluble diluent, since our factory produces methanol, this problem is naturally resolved
Make regular comparisons with the distillation method; the solvent should be checked frequently, as water content can have a significant impact on the accuracy
This has already been taken into account; we sample methanol daily for analysis, and the moisture content in methanol is calculated and removed separately. I didn’t consider comparing it regularly with the distillation method; thanks to the moderator for the reminder
