Bearings are important components that support shafts to function properly. Bearing bushes are typically made from high-quality cast iron or cast steel; dovetail grooves are machined inside these bushes, and a lining is poured in. The alloy used to manufacture the lining of sliding bearings is known as bearing alloy. The commonly used bearing alloy for turbines and other rotating equipment is babbitt alloy (i.e., a bearing alloy with a low melting point), commonly known as black metal. Babbitt alloys are classified into two categories based on their chemical composition: tin-based bearing alloys and lead-based bearing alloys. Sn-based bearing alloys are alloys based on Sn, with small amounts of Sb and Cu added; a typical grade is ZChSnSb11-6. They are commonly used for casting shaft bearings that require high load capacity, high speed performance, and good corrosion resistance, such as the main shaft bearings in steam turbines and generators ; Lead-based bearing alloys are alloys based on Fb to which elements such as Sb, Sn, and Cu are added; a typical grade is ZChPbSh16-16-2. They are commonly used to manufacture bearings for equipment under low to medium loads and at low to medium speeds, such as bearing linings for pumps, fans, coal mills, and motors.
