Copper is beneficial to the human body, but excessive amounts should be avoided. Copper is an essential trace nutrient for human health; it plays a crucial role in the development and function of the blood, central nervous system, and immune system, as well as hair, skin, and bone tissues, and internal organs such as the brain, liver, and heart. Generally speaking, the copper content in drinking water is very low, less than 0.01 mg/L. Modern scientific research has shown that trace amounts of copper in drinking water are beneficial to the human body; it helps to compensate for any deficiency of copper in human diets. Additionally, copper can kill certain bacteria present in tap water. Therefore, there is a risk of exceeding the limits. Soluble copper salts are toxic, mainly because copper ions can denature proteins, rendering them physiologically inactive. Excessive copper intake can lead to toxic symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, acute hemolysis, and tubular degeneration. There have been news reports of communities experiencing mass diarrhea due to excessive copper levels in their drinking water. Although excessive copper levels do not cause serious diseases in humans, long-term consumption of water with high copper content may lead to poisoning symptoms such as deformation of the renal tubules, resulting in acute copper poisoning. This places a burden on internal organs and can also affect fetal development.
