On the morning of June 1, the pinacol coke calcination project for high-end graphite materials at Jiangsu Jinling Chuanglian New Materials Co., Ltd. (a joint venture), which is operated and managed by Jinling Petrochemical, was successfully completed. It has now entered the production preparation phase, with the production of qualified products expected to begin in July. Zhang Chunsheng, Chairman of the Board and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Company, presided over the signing ceremony. In September 2020, in order to implement Sinopec’s strategy of shifting from oil-based products to specialty products, to support the subsequent calcination processes for Jinling Petrochemical’s needle coke project, and to create a brand for high-end graphite material products, Sinopec Group Capital Co., Ltd. and Lianyungang Ganyu Urban Construction and Development Co., Ltd. jointly established Jiangsu Jinling Chuanglian New Materials Co., Ltd. in the Haizhou Bay Biotechnology Park in Ganyu District, thereby launching the calcination project for high-end graphite material needle coke on a full scale. The project is to be constructed in two phases. The first phase utilizes the BEPC general contracting model, with an investment of 340 million yuan. Since the planning and initiation of the project in mid-2020, Jinling Petrochemical has worked in close coordination with local authorities and received their full support; all parties involved made every effort to overcome challenges such as those related to epidemic prevention, and it was possible to complete the construction tasks to a high standard in less than 2 years. Once operational, the project will use Jinling Petrochemical’s needle coke as the main raw material, enabling an annual production of 50,000 tons of calcined needle coke and 18,600 tons of anode materials; the annual sales revenue is expected to exceed 900 million yuan. It is reported that the calcined needle coke product can be used to produce graphite electrodes for electric arc furnace steelmaking, while the anode material can be used as a raw material for lithium battery anodes. Once completed and put into operation, the project will not only contribute to the development of China Petrochemical’s high-end graphite materials industry and help establish a competitive advantage in the domestic market, but it will also have a positive impact on the regional economy and society as well as the development of related industries in the area.
