China’s first million-ton ethylene plant started up successfully with a single batch of feed October 31, 2006 – News came on October 27 from Sinopec’s Maoming Petrochemical Company stating that the newly built expansion facility with an annual production capacity of 640,000 tons of ethylene had completed the entire production process in October, enabling successful start-up using a single batch of feed in a safe manner, with qualified products being produced. The completion of this facility marks an increase in Maoming’s annual ethylene production from over 300,000 tons to over 1 million tons, making it China’s first ethylene production base with an output capacity exceeding 1 million tons. 　　In the spring of 2005, with the approval of the relevant authorities, the expansion project for Maoming Petrochemical’s plant, which involves an investment of over 8 billion yuan and aims to increase annual ethylene production by 640,000 tons, officially began construction. This project was designated as part of the second batch of key technical transformation projects under the “Double High, One Excellent” initiative. It is a key project under China Petrochemical’s plan to develop petrochemical facilities in the south, and it is also one of the “Top Ten Projects” aimed at accelerating modernization in Guangdong. 　　Based on the existing Maoming ethylene plant, the newly built facilities for polypropylene, high-density ethylene, high-pressure polyethylene, etc., have the largest production capacity in China at present. The completion and operation of Maoming’s million-ton ethylene plant not only generates 15 billion yuan in additional sales revenue for the enterprise each year, but it also plays a positive role in improving the layout of ethylene production in China and optimizing the structure of available ethylene products.
