Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued the \"Guidelines for the Integrated Application of Industrial Internet in the Petrochemical Industry\" (hereinafter referred to as the \"Guidelines\”), providing a reference for petrochemical enterprises to identify relevant application scenarios, determine implementation approaches, and promote the adoption of such technologies. The petrochemical industry is characterized by a wide variety of products, long production processes, complex material properties, harsh operating conditions, and it often involves hazardous chemical processes, chemicals, and major hazard sources that are subject to strict supervision. In recent years, China’s petrochemical industry has actively explored the innovative applications of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, 5G, digital twins, and the Internet of Things, expanding its use from peripheral aspects of production to its core processes, and has achieved certain results. By strengthening the empowerment of the industrial Internet, accelerating the development of specialized industrial Internet platforms, advancing the establishment of industry standard systems, and deepening the integrated application of next-generation information technologies, the petrochemical industry is driving its digital transformation – an inevitable choice for improving total factor productivity, creating new competitive advantages, and establishing a solid foundation for sustainability and safety. The Guidelines focus primarily on key stages in the midstream sector, such as refining and chemical processing, pipeline transportation, production and manufacturing, and product sales. They are suitable for petrochemical enterprises that already have a solid foundation in digitalization and intelligence, as well as for those with a weaker digital foundation but a need to carry out further improvements. According to the Guidelines, the industrial Internet enables the petrochemical industry to adopt an \"8+2\" application model that includes platform-based design, intelligent production, personalized customization, networked collaboration, service-oriented extensions, digital management, refined investment and financing, visual governance, as well as applications in the areas of industrial Internet + safe production and industrial Internet + green and low-carbon development. This model covers 36 different application areas, with 137 specific use cases having been identified so far. For example, in the area of intelligent manufacturing, it covers sectors such as infrastructure, refining and chemical processing, modern coal chemical industry, traditional coal chemical industry, as well as fertilizer, chlor-alkali, tires, fine chemicals, and new materials. Regarding “5G + industrial Internet,” the Guidelines classify applications in the petrochemical industry into three main categories: data collection, control and management, and data transmission. They focus on four application models: intelligent production, digital management, visualized governance, and green and low-carbon development. The Guidelines suggest that the integrated application of the petrochemical industry and the industrial Internet can be advanced through seven steps: status assessment, strategic planning, organizational preparation, overall design, solution design, implementation and construction, and summary of outcomes. When advancing the integrated application of the industrial internet, petrochemical enterprises need more comprehensive diagnostic assessments, more systematic blueprint planning, clearer path selection, and stronger organizational support. In addition, petrochemical enterprises should, based on their own capabilities, collaborate with ecological partners such as research institutions and solution providers to enhance cross-sectoral collaborative innovation and promote the integrated application of the industrial Internet in the petrochemical industry.
