Recently, China’s largest oil and gas field, the Changqing Oil Field, has produced a total of over 700 billion cubic meters of natural gas. If this amount were converted into crude oil equivalent, it would be equivalent to the output of a super-large oil field with a production capacity of 50 million tons over 11 years. It is estimated that 700 billion cubic meters of natural gas can meet the gas needs of 100 million households in the country for approximately 27 years. It can replace 850 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.02 billion tons, playing an important role in optimizing the energy structure, improving the ecological environment, and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The Ordos Basin, where exploration and development activities for the Changqing Oil Field take place, features typical low-permeability, low-pressure, and low-abundance oil and gas reservoirs, with a density comparable to that of an emery stone. In recent years, driven by the rapid growth in domestic natural gas demand, Changqing Oilfield has continued to intensify its efforts in natural gas exploration and development. It has focused on studying the geological evolution of the Ordos Basin, as well as the mechanisms of oil and gas formation and storage, thereby developing original geological theories for the rapid acquisition of natural gas resources. The field has also made breakthroughs in the key core technologies related to the exploration and development of low-permeability, ultra-low-permeability, and tight gas fields, which has facilitated the discovery of new natural gas resources and accelerated the conversion of recoverable reserves. “85% of the natural gas produced by the Changqing Oilfield is unconventional natural gas, making its economic and efficient exploitation very challenging. ”Lan Yifei, manager of the Gas Field Development Department at Changqing Oilfield, said, “By leveraging our accumulated resource advantages and breakthroughs in key core technologies, we have developed 14 gas fields in areas such as Jingbian, Yulin, and Sulihe in ‘low-reservoir-pressure, low-permeability, and low-oil-content’ oil and gas fields. For three consecutive years, we have maintained a stable and high production level of over 50 billion cubic meters.” ”At present, the Changqing Oilfield has become China’s largest natural gas production base and a hub for onshore natural gas pipelines. The natural gas produced each year accounts for about 1/4 of the country’s total gas output. Through various major natural gas pipelines such as the West-to-East Gas Pipeline and the Shaanxi-Beijing Pipeline, this gas has ensured a stable supply of energy for major events like the Olympic Games. It also meets the industrial needs as well as the residential gas requirements of over 50 large and medium-sized cities in regions including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia. Guided by the \"dual carbon\" goals, Changqing Oilfield has proactively adopted a \"natural gas+\" integrated development model, actively exploring new pathways for the coordinated development of its traditional oil and gas operations with new energy sources. The First Gas Extraction Plant, located in Jingbian County, Shaanxi Province, has built distributed photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 7.32 megawatts in the heart of the gas field. These plants generate 9 million kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to saving 1,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 3,000 tons. Natural gas is not only a clean and low-carbon energy source but also a high-quality raw material. Changqing Oilfield has made significant progress in the natural gas value-added project, constructing Asia’s largest natural gas ethane recovery facility. This facility processes 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, enabling the production of 1.05 million tons of ethane, 450,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas, and stable light hydrocarbons. This approach increases the value of these resources by more than three times, allowing for the efficient and precise utilization of the high-value components contained in natural gas. At present, over 20,000 gas wells in the Changqing gas field are extracting natural gas from a depth of 3 kilometers beneath the Ordos Basin, with an average daily production of more than 140 million cubic meters, which is continuously delivered to various parts of the country.
