Recently, Masdar in the UAE and the Tadweer Group signed a joint development agreement to launch the UAE’s first commercial project for converting waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Located in Abu Dhabi, this project will handle approximately 500,000 tons of waste per year. It employs a hybrid production process: green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, while syngas is generated by gasifying waste; this syngas is then converted into SAF using established chemical processes. Once operational, this project will help Abu Dhabi become a regional SAF hub, providing crucial support for the decarbonization of industries related to Emirates Airlines. As a core project for **implementing the strategy, it is well aligned with various plans of the UAE’s SAF overall policy, low-carbon hydrogen policy, and the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. At the same time, this project will help the Tadweer Group achieve its goal of keeping 80% of waste in Abu Dhabi away from landfills by 2030, and it will give rise to new value chains in the fields of waste management, green hydrogen, and renewable fuels. Leveraging Masdar’s technical expertise in renewable energy and green hydrogen, as well as the Tadweer Group’s strengths in waste resource utilization, this project will reinforce the UAE’s position as a leader in clean energy innovation. It will also help Abu Dhabi become a global leader in the production of low-carbon fuels, facilitating coordinated development across various industries.
