On October 11, the Fuzhou Ecology and Environment Bureau issued the \"Approval Opinion on the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Isocyanate Co., Ltd.’s 1.5 million tons per year MDI capacity expansion project,\" approving the construction of the project in accordance with the location, nature, scale of the construction as specified in the environmental impact assessment report, as well as the environmental protection measures to be implemented. The project is located within the reserved land at the existing facility of Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Isocyanate Co., Ltd. in the Jiangyin Port City Economic Zone of Fuzhou. It aims to upgrade the MDI refrigerant, condensation, photolysis, and separation units based on the existing 800,000 tons per year MDI production capacity, so as to meet a production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year of MDI. Related utility systems and auxiliary facilities will also be upgraded and expanded accordingly; pre-installed equipment such as reactors, towers, heat exchangers, and pumps will be acquired. The project will result in an additional production capacity of 700,000 tons per year of MDI, 340,500 tons per year of HCL, and 0.26 tons per year of methanol. Wanhua Chemical’s MDI production capacity: On October 25, 2024, Wanhua Chemical’s official website published the first public announcement regarding the environmental impact assessment for the integrated project to upgrade and expand the MDI production capacity of Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Isocyanate Co., Ltd., with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. According to Wanhua Chemical’s 2024 annual report, as of the end of 2024, the company had an MDI production capacity of 3.8 million tons per year. In addition, Wanhua’s MDI facility in Fujian will undergo upgrades to increase its production capacity by another 700,000 tons per year; these upgrades are expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026. By then, Wanhua’s global MDI production capacity will reach 4.5 million tons per year.
