ExxonMobil’s third chemical recycling facility for plastic waste comes online

On February 2, ExxonMobil announced that its third chemical recycling facility (which the company refers to as advanced Recycling) in Baytown, Texas, United States, has been put into operation. With this new facility in place, the company is now able to process up to 250 million pounds (113,398 tons) of plastic waste per year. Meanwhile, the company plans to achieve a global chemical recycling capacity of 450 million pounds per year by the end of 2026, so that more plastic does not end up in landfills but instead becomes raw material for the products people use on a daily basis. Chemical recycling serves as a complement to traditional recycling methods; it can handle plastics that are difficult to recycle. By integrating chemical recycling facilities into existing plants, it is possible to scale up production more quickly and efficiently, turning plastic waste into fuel and raw materials for the production of new plastics.
