At 15:27 on April 15, as the pyrolysis gas compressor stopped operating, all three units of Jilin Petrochemical’s 1.2 million tons per year ethylene plant came to a smooth stop, marking the successful shutdown of the plant and the commencement of its first short-term maintenance period. During the shutdown process, the plant carried out specific operations focusing on key aspects such as steam pipeline balancing and coordinated operation of multiple units, in order to complete the removal of materials from the pyrolysis gas compressor, ethylene compressor, and propylene compressor, as well as the recovery of materials within the system, in the shortest possible time. The cracking gas compressor, a key equipment in the ethylene plant, is crucial for ensuring a smooth shutdown of the plant. The operator carries out systematic adjustments to control the oil temperature and pressure, prevents surging issues, and ensures a safe shutdown of the compressor. To maximize the recovery of materials within the facility and minimize material losses, the plant established a dedicated team in advance to conduct three rounds of tabletop simulations. Special plans for the recovery of ethylene and propylene were developed, with appropriate timing arrangements made. By setting up temporary material recovery lines on-site and using separate lines and tanks for the storage of different materials, efficient point-to-point recovery of materials was achieved while ensuring safety. Next, the plant will use nitrogen and water to purge and displace the system, closely monitor the relevant parameters of the system to prevent overheating and overpressure in the equipment and pipelines, reduce the levels of flammable gases and waste alkali in the system, ensure that the analysis results are satisfactory, and make thorough preparations for subsequent maintenance work, thereby ensuring that the maintenance is carried out safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
