In the packing gland section of reciprocating compressors, if no markings are provided, the packing boxes are often assembled incorrectly. How can one determine the correct order in the absence of such markings?
It is personally recommended to make markings, especially when the stuffing box has machining holes for oil injection, water cooling, nitrogen introduction, and air leakage recovery; such markings are essential to avoid equipment failures caused by incorrect assembly. The specific marking process consists of three steps: 1) Determine the relative position between the stuffing box gland and the main body; 2) Identify the sequence of assembly for each stuffing box (a “∧” triangle symbol can be used with a marker on the entire stuffing box); 3) Determine the function and location of each hole on the stuffing box gland
The sequence from the cylinder to the crankshaft is: radial ring, tangential ring, and flow-blocking ring.
For multiple sets of packing, generally only three packing boxes are different from the others; just remember the positions of these three sets.

Read the drawings several times and disassemble and reassemble the stuffing box a few times, and you’ll remember it.

The stuffing boxes are marked numerically before leaving the factory; otherwise, with so many models that look similar to each other, it would be very troublesome if mistakes occur during installation at the customer’s site. Generally, markings are made on the outer surface; some are achieved through laser marking while others are done by stamping. If it’s too dirty, it may be difficult to see the markings, so you can clean it off to check for any signs. Manufacturers that do not provide such markings are surely not professional enough :lol
