I’m just starting to work with centrifugal compressors. As shown in the diagram below, where is the seal for the centrifugal compressor’s partition? What are the functions of the inter-stage seals and the impeller inlet seal?
Diaphragm sealing is also known as inter-stage sealing; its function is to separate the impeller of one stage from that of the next, creating a fixed pressure difference that enables gradual pressure increase across the stages. The function of the impeller inlet seal is to prevent the pressure at the outlet from returning to the inlet.
The serrated part on the drawing over there is the inter-stage seal.
