Our plant uses Shengli Blower’s ammonia compressors, and one unit stopped operating recently. Previously, the ammonia compressor would stop whenever the methanol cycle stopped. I would like to ask: what impact does stopping the methanol cycle while keeping the compressor running have on the unit?

Firstly, the ammonia compressor can operate in full reflux mode, but it is necessary to maintain the inlet temperatures of each stage properly, and the inlet separators in each stage must retain a certain liquid level. However, running at no load for 48 hours is extremely uneconomical; we shut down the system right after monitoring and adjusting the liquid levels in the acid recovery and ammonia removal coolers. With proficiency, it can be fully completed within 2 hours from the warm pipe state to the normal state. Except when the cold-start warm-up time exceeds 30 minutes, some compressors also have a two-stage warm-up process
It shouldn’t have much of an impact; ammonia compressors can operate under no-load conditions, as long as the unit does not experience surge.
