Lubricating oil sight glass structure

There is a metal piece with an opening inside the lubricant viewing window; I’m not sure what its purpose is. It’s different from those I’ve seen before. Has anyone else seen it?
They should be used together, one for high oil level and one for low oil level

My understanding is that it’s to prevent interference with observations; with the steel plates in place, there will be no interference caused by disturbances or oil mist, etc. I’m not sure if that’s correct
As a background, it makes the oil level display more visible for easier observation.
