The flat key that connects the fan impeller to the main shaft is missing. I want to fabricate one myself – is heat treatment necessary? Is it sufficient to carry out quenching and tempering? It seems that my own repair workshop isn’t capable of providing proper heat treatment
For ordinary applications, plain keys manufactured by oneself can be used without heat treatment. However, if the operating conditions of the impeller are severe and high strength and wear resistance from the flat key are required, quenching and tempering treatment would be better. If your own workshop is not capable of carrying out proper heat treatment, you can consider hiring a professional heat treatment company to do it. .
