Guys, let’s discuss a few issues regarding the LNG industry and BOG cryogenic labyrinth compressors. 1) The normal operating temperature is -100°C. Is pre-cooling required before starting up? 2) Can it operate for a long time at 0% load? 3) What is the service life of the piston skirt (casing) of a labyrinth compressor, and what is the replacement cycle?

The BOG cryogenic labyrinth compressor features a contactless sealing structure, which prevents the brittle failure of conventional packing ring seals and similar components under low-temperature conditions; as a result, it is capable of operating in such low-temperature environments. Pre-cooling is not required before startup; the main components such as the valve plates in the compressor have been tested under -196°C conditions. It can operate for a long time at 0% load. It can operate for a long time as long as the inlet pressure and temperature do not exceed the alarm values set by the compressor. If the compressor operates at 0% load for more than 10 minutes, the system will issue an alarm to alert the operator to increase the load or shut down the machine.

Since there is no contact between the piston and the cylinder in a labyrinth compressor, pre-cooling is not required before starting it up ; Horizontal piston compressors generally require pre-cooling before starting up. 2) Can it operate for a long time at 0% load? I need a solution. 3) What is the service life of the piston skirt (casing) of a labyrinth compressor, and what is the replacement cycle? The typical service life is 3 years
The suction temperature of the first-stage cylinder is below zero, and the cylinder body is not equipped with cooling water for temperature reduction; therefore, it is not possible to operate at 0% load for an extended period of time. This leads to wear of the piston ring seals and the inner cylinder, with the main consequence being an increase in the temperature at the output of the first stage
It’s best to pre-cool in advance; otherwise, the exhaust temperature will be too high
