The refrigerant compressor stopped operating suddenly during operation; there was a refrigerant leak at the high-pressure side, and the shaft could not be rotated. Upon inspection, it was found that the thrust bearings on the high-pressure side were worn, with the wear amount reaching around 1 mm. The thrust disc was also worn. A large amount of aluminum shavings had welded themselves to the surface at the high-pressure dry gas seal due to high temperatures. The shaft seal rings on the outer end were also severely worn, and a large quantity of aluminum shavings were present in the disassembled dry gas seal. After urgently replacing the thrust disc, thrust bearings, and dry gas seal, the compressor started working normally. However, the pressure at the high-pressure dry gas seal was too high, approaching the alarm level. The temperature of the shaft bearings on the low-pressure side was around 105°C. What could be the reason for this? Also, could the damage to the high-pressure dry gas seal cause the entire shaft to shift towards the low-pressure side? How large will the displacement be? Where do aluminum shavings come from?

Additionally, it’s necessary to check whether the balance disc is damaged; if it is, the axial force will increase
Mainly check whether the balance tube is blocked, which causes an imbalance in axial force
Check whether the filters related to the process are damaged, such as those for refrigerant oil and sealing gas.
We now suspect that the balance tube is blocked; the aluminum shavings and other impurities inside might be debris resulting from wear on the comb-like seals of the balance disc. We’re not sure if this hypothesis is correct
Let me ask again: will the flow rates in the high-pressure and low-pressure cylinders of the dry gas seal affect the shaft play?
Under normal conditions, flow rate does not affect the axial force; however, in extreme situations such as surge, it may have an impact

Is it definitely aluminum shavings? Could it be the babbitt on the tile? Babbitt has a relatively low melting point.
