On November 29, 2023, good news came from Xinjiang Zhongkun New Materials Co., Ltd. The compression units supplied by Shenhua Gas Turbine Group Co., Ltd. for the company’s 2×600,000 t/a natural gas-to-ethylene glycol project (Phase I) were started up successfully on the first attempt, producing qualified polyester-grade ethylene glycol products. This is currently the largest natural gas-to-ethylene glycol project in the world. Shenmu Group supplied 10 centrifugal compressors, 5 gear compressors, and two sets of ORC power generation units for this project. Starting from the shipment in March 2023, and after 9 months, the installation and commissioning of 14 sets of units were successfully completed, laying a solid foundation for the successful first operation. It is reported that the project is located in the Shangku Petroleum and Petrochemical Industrial Park in Korla City, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 1,400 mu and will be constructed in two phases, with a total investment of 10.8 billion yuan; its production capacity will be 1.2 million tons of ethylene glycol per year. Using natural gas as raw material and employing the syngas-based technology for ethylene glycol production, this project enables a revolutionary transformation of natural gas from a fuel to a raw material, and further from a raw material to a finished product. It fills the gap in chemical fiber raw materials in the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture and fosters integrated industrial development. Once Phase 1 of the project is in stable operation, it will generate annual sales revenue of over 3 billion yuan and provide direct employment for more than 800 people, which is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of the local economy and society.
