Our company produces ethylene glycol, and we have a tank pump used for this process. The medium handled by this pump is diethylene glycol, which is quite viscous; in addition, it contains fine particles. The temperature reaches 160 degrees Celsius. Using ordinary centrifugal pumps for transporting this medium often leads to the failure of the mechanical seals, as the medium adheres to the friction surfaces, causing coking. As a result, seal leakage occurs within just a few days. What should be done in such situations, and what type of pumping pump should be used?

For pumps used to transport media containing solid particles, it is required that the moving parts be made of wear-resistant materials; where necessary, the shaft seals should be flushed with a clean liquid. I’m not sure whether the pump used by the poster has double-end face seals. When the viscosity of the medium is high (greater than 650–1000 mm2/s), gear pumps or screw pumps could be considered; however, since the poster hasn’t specified the viscosity, it’s difficult to make a choice. If minor pressure fluctuations are not a concern, then a pneumatic diaphragm pump could be an option.

Use the plan32 method; rinse with clean medium
For high viscosity, an internal gear pump can be used. I’m not sure what those small particles are
For viscous, granular media, a screw pump, gear pump, or diaphragm metering pump can be selected depending on the size of the particles

For media at 160 degrees, mechanical seals are used, and the aging of the sealing rings is a significant issue. Our unit uses Desmi gear pumps to transport materials with a viscosity of around 120; the seal rings have a very short lifespan (made of perfluoroether), and they are flushed with 53A. Later, it was replaced with a magnetic gear pump, which the operators really liked.
It is recommended to use a magnetic gear pump; it would be best to lower the temperature in order to increase the viscosity.
