As of December 3, the first domestically produced 100,000 cubic meter high-pressure injection compressor used in PetroChina’s carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects in Jilin Oilfield has been operating safely and stably for over 10,000 hours. The successful application of this compressor represents a milestone achievement for CNPC in the field of CCUS, a cutting-edge green technology; it enables the company to overcome the bottleneck issues related to key equipment and achieve self-sufficiency, marking a systematic breakthrough in the localization of CCUS equipment. Injecting captured carbon dioxide underground for oil displacement and sequestration is the core of CCUS. In 2014, CNPC built the first supercritical carbon dioxide injection station in China at the Jilin oil field – the Hei 46 cyclic injection station. Its core equipment, the high-pressure injection compressor, serves as the \"heart\" of this injection station. However, this “heart” relies heavily on imports; the annual cost of importing valve materials amounts to 800,000 yuan, and the procurement process is time-consuming. When critical components are damaged, months have to pass before replacements are available, which severely affects the continuity of tests and their economic viability. This increases operational costs and constitutes a potential obstacle to the large-scale industrial application of CCUS technology. Faced with these challenges, CNPC decided to tackle the problem on its own, starting with a small valve element. In 2020, the CCUS technology research team at Jilin Oilfield challenged the monopoly on imported valve discs. After dozens of trials, the valve disc was successfully modified after a year; the replacement cycle was extended from 1 month to over 3 months, the compressor’s processing capacity increased to 115% of its rated capacity, and energy consumption per unit also decreased. Through big data analysis and the examination of tens of thousands of parameter sets during compressor operation, the CCUS technology research team also discovered that the original compressor lubricants suffered from \"over-lubrication\". Through repeated testing, the lubricant dripping rate was optimized from one drop every 13 seconds to one drop every 18 seconds, extending the usage period of each barrel of lubricant from 7 days to 9 days. This spirit of craftsmanship has accumulated experience and strengthened confidence for the domestic substitution of compressors. In 2023, Jilin Oilfield, in collaboration with domestic equipment manufacturing companies, conducted industrial tests on China’s first self-developed supercritical carbon dioxide injection compressor unit at the Hei 46 recycling injection station, and it was put into operation officially. Since then, the Jilin Oilfield has worked together with relevant domestic entities to make full efforts toward localization. As of the time of writing, Jilin Oilfield has successfully developed Asia’s first compression unit designed specifically for CCUS projects across the entire value chain, as well as China’s first set of injection equipment for simultaneously injecting carbon dioxide and water gas. The measurement accuracy of this dual-media system exceeds 95%, marking a shift by Sinopec from achieving breakthroughs in individual CCUS components to achieving domestic substitution for entire systems. At present, the Jilin Oilfield is conducting on-site simultaneous testing of core equipment and tools such as domestic compressors, dense-phase injection pumps, and multi-media intelligent flow meters, while continuing to carry out follow-up evaluations and process finalization. Once the product is mass-produced and put into use, it is expected to enable a complete domestic substitution for similar imported products.
