Are there any veterans in the forum who have designed large ethylene glycol tanks with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters? This is our first time designing two ethylene glycol storage tanks with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters each, and there are some issues we’re not quite sure about. Since we have no prior experience in designing such tanks, we found a model with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters made of stainless steel. For our tanks, however, using stainless steel would be too expensive. Would it be possible to use composite material or carbon steel with an aluminum coating on the inside? There’s another question: why are there heating coils inside the ethylene glycol storage tank? There’s nothing special about it; it’s just an ordinary tank with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters. However, stainless steel is indeed necessary; the main reason is not corrosion, but rather the fact that carbon steel can affect the color of ethylene glycol, which is why stainless steel is used. Rolled composite sheets can be used, but the bottom of the tank must be made of pure stainless steel, as composite sheets inevitably result in contact between carbon steel and the contents at the joints. The top of the tank should also be made of pure stainless steel; given its limited thickness, composite sheets offer little economic advantage in this case. So if rolled composite plates are used, they can only be applied to the tank wall. I also have experience using special coatings; there are coatings designed specifically for ethylene glycol, and they perform quite well. According to the coating manufacturers, such coatings can last eight to ten years, and in practice, those that have been used for three to four years have shown no problems at all. Aluminum spraying is not highly recommended; firstly, it seems to be expensive, and secondly, there are said to be issues with capillary pores. If using paint, it is essential to find a reputable paint manufacturer and a skilled construction team; ideally, the paint manufacturer should be able to handle the spraying itself. There’s nothing special else. Normally, a heating coil isn’t necessary, so there should be no issue with freezing. A coil of that large diameter wouldn’t yield very good results either; it’s better to think carefully about using a coil or not. Additionally, for the tank roof, it is now possible to consider using products manufactured by specialized manufacturers, which offer lower costs and greater professionalism. That’s about it. I checked and found that the freezing point of pure ethylene glycol is -12 degrees, so it seems unnecessary to use heating elements. In northern regions where insulation is available, there should be no problems; the heating elements are merely used for anti-freezing purposes. With such a large diameter, the coils serve more as a psychological comfort measure That's all.

Spraying, on the other hand, doesn’t matter. It’s best to use pure stainless steel for the tank top; although it doesn’t come into contact with the material, rust on the reinforcing bars or similar elements over time can be a problem.

It is recommended to use stainless steel for a 10,000 cubic meter storage tank; if it isn’t a low-pressure tank, the wall thickness doesn’t need to be very thick.
For the reinforcement rings of ethylene glycol storage tanks, we generally use carbon steel coated with paint for corrosion protection, as the strength of carbon steel is superior to that of stainless steel
We haven’t done anything that large before; the small storage tanks we have used are made of stainless steel, with the external reinforcement beams being made of carbon steel. Our small storage tank also needs to be isolated with nitrogen.
