How should the pressure be determined for the hydrostatic testing of pressure vessels?
The hydrostatic test pressure in our company is 1.25 times the design pressure.
This issue is quite complex; first, the pressure vessel must undergo a thorough inspection, and based on the results of that inspection (such as thickness reduction, etc.), the specific test pressure, test temperature, and so on are determined. It cannot be simply determined by multiplying the original design pressure by 1.25.
According to the requirements of GB150, there is another ratio after 1.25; the pressure varies depending on the material and the design temperature

(1) The regular inspection of pressure vessels is carried out in accordance with TSG R7001-2013, the \"Rules for Regular Inspection of Pressure Vessels\". (2) During the regular inspection of pressure vessels, if the user or the inspection agency has doubts regarding the safety condition of the pressure vessel, a pressure test shall be conducted. (3) The test parameters for the pressure resistance test, such as test pressure and temperature, are calculated based on the allowable (monitoring) usage parameters determined during this periodic inspection (the values for the pressure resistance test are shown in the figure below). (4) The preparatory work for the pressure test, safety measures, test medium, test procedure, and acceptance criteria shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant provisions of TSG 21-2016 \"Safety Technical Supervision Regulations for Fixed Pressure Vessels\".
Now, the pressure test coefficient for GB150 has been changed from 1.15 to 1.1
It is determined as 1.25 times the original design pressure.
The test parameters for the pressure resistance test, such as the test pressure and temperature, are calculated based on the allowable (monitoring) parameters determined during this periodic inspection. The calculation formula follows that used for test pressure in GB150, where P represents the maximum operating pressure determined in this inspection.
