I would like to ask the experienced colleagues: for thin-walled structures, the membrane theory is used, while for thick-walled containers, the Lame formula is applied. Yet when using analytical design methods, it is still the membrane stress that is considered. Is there any contradiction in this? I’m a beginner in container design; I need help. Thank you
It’s not contradictory; it relates to the strength failure criterion used, and in engineering, all simplifications and assumptions are applied.
