How to determine whether to choose carbon steel or stainless steel for expansion joints?
It depends on the medium you use. Select according to the material of the applicable pipeline.
Through calculation, it is generally sufficient to choose a material that is the same as that of the shell; it is also common to use stainless steel expansion joints for carbon steel shells, as at the same thickness, the single-wave stiffness of stainless steel expansion joints is much lower than that of carbon steel expansion joints, and the maximum displacement per wave is much greater, giving stainless steel better compensatory capabilities.
Expansion joints are special pipe fittings; if stainless steel can be used, carbon steel cannot be used. This is a matter of process safety principles, not about saving a few dollars.
