When designing a small stationary device, I’m considering whether to use end caps or reverse flanges for the cylinder; I’m not sure what the differences between these two designs are. Could anyone please advise? Has anyone paid attention to this? Under what conditions is it necessary to choose the cylinder end, and under what conditions is it necessary to choose the reverse flange?
In the reverse flange design, the diameter of the bolt circle is smaller than that of the equipment, while at the end of the cylinder, the diameter of the bolt circle is larger than the equipment’s diameter… That’s the most obvious difference, right?
Choose based on the conditions of your device; if it’s feasible to calculate it, then consider the cost and the difficulty of manufacturing
I’m not sure what the operating conditions of the equipment mentioned by the original poster are like; why choose between these two structures? The cylinder end structure is generally used in high-pressure applications ; Reverse flanges are used in cases with large openings on flat covers.

Thank you. This is a filter for the compressor’s intake port. Theoretically, it does not fall under the category of pressure vessels subject to regulatory inspection; it is a cylinder with a diameter of DN150 to DN200, equipped with a wire mesh filter element inside. One end of the cylinder has a flat cover with connection ports, while the other end originally had a flat cover fitted with a flanged connection. When reviewing the drawings, I realized that this design is not suitable, so I am considering using a more reliable structure – specifically, either reverse flanges or connections at the end of the cylinder. The operating pressure is not high, staying below 4 Mpa.

When the diameter is not large, a end flange structure can be used directly; generally, for larger diameters, a reverse flange structure is employed to reduce the diameter of the cover.
