This is how I understand it: it refers to the weld joints. If there is only one section with a thickness greater than 50 mm, and the weld joints on either side have a thickness of less than 50 mm after trimming, then that requirement does not need to be met; however, ring welds or longitudinal welds within the structure itself that have a thickness greater than 50 mm still need to comply with this requirement.
