As the title suggests, polytetrafluoroethylene gaskets are prohibited in butadiene systems – why? Which gasket can be used?
The NMP method requires the use of metal serrated gaskets for flanges in systems with high concentrations of butadiene. Since serrated gaskets need a higher sealing preload to reduce the resistance to the diffusion of air and oxygen into the system, their all-metal construction also helps to decrease the oxygen content within the gasket. Theory and practice have shown that polytetrafluoroethylene can induce butadiene polymers; therefore, the use of polytetrafluoro plastic gaskets is prohibited in high-concentration butadiene systems.
