It was the first time I encountered an acetylene cylinder – is acetylene a liquefied gas?
Pure acetylene is a colorless, aromatic, flammable gas. It poses a risk of violent explosion in liquid and solid states, or in gas state at certain pressures; factors such as heat, vibration, and electric sparks can trigger an explosion, therefore it cannot be stored or transported after being liquefied under pressure. Acetylene cylinders are generally filled with acetylene dissolved in liquid acetone. At 15°C and 1.5 MPa, the solubility of acetylene in acetone is 237 g/L; the solution remains stable under these conditions. Therefore, acetylene does not qualify as a liquefied gas.
In terms of the concept of liquefied gases, since acetylene can be liquefied under certain pressures, it falls into the category of liquefied gases. However, since acetylene in its liquid state is highly explosive, it is not stored in a liquefied form in cylinders, but rather in a dissolved form. Therefore, what is in the acetylene cylinder is not a liquefied gas, but a dissolved gas.
