For my equipment, the minimum thickness specified for the head design is 8.5 mm; I used 10 mm thick plates to manufacture the head. After shaping, the straight edges of this head are relatively thick. The cylinder part uses 8 mm thick plates, and I was thinking of thinning those parts before welding them. Is it possible to directly thin them to 8 mm before proceeding with welding? Is the minimum thickness still only 8.5mm? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you!
So the thickness reduction cannot be less than 8.5 mm, right?
The straight edge section of the head can be regarded as a section of the cylinder; if the strength of the head material is not lower than that of the cylinder, it can be thinned to 8 mm and then welded together. The slope at the thinned area should not exceed 1:3. Thinning it out is too troublesome, so in most cases a smooth weld transition is used instead.
Can it be thought of that way? Is there any evidence?
According to the 150 requirements, if the thickness difference is no more than 3 mm, no thinning treatment is necessary. Additionally, it is not recommended to thin the straight edges of the end caps to 8 mm; a difference of 0.5 mm will already result in misalignment during assembly. After all, the straight edges of the head are part of the head itself, and the stresses acting on the head are quite complex.
Then just trim it to 8.5 and weld it to the cylinder, right?
Measure the outer perimeter of the head directly, and cut the material according to this perimeter length (that is, the outer perimeter of the cylinder), so that the head can be welded in alignment with the outer surface of the cylinder.
