Hello, I would like to ask: for a sulfuric acid storage tank at normal temperature and pressure with dimensions DN2800X3900, what wall thickness is appropriate? Does carbon steel have sufficient corrosion resistance?
There is corrosion; the corrosion margin is taken as 2 mm.
I checked the corrosion manual and found that carbon steel has good corrosion resistance at normal pressure, but the corrosion data table it provides is not suitable for carbon steel materials – what does this mean?
It means it’s not suitable for dilute sulfuric acid; concentrated sulfuric acid is generally fine
Check the concentration. 93-98%, CS is sufficient; as a precaution, C=6mm
Carbon steel and low-alloy steel can be used without any problem with concentrated sulfuric acid, but not with dilute sulfuric acid.
Different sulfuric acid concentrations result in different levels of corrosion
For concentrated sulfuric acid with a concentration of over 95% (such as 98% industrial sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid), carbon steel is commonly used. It should be noted that a nitrogen or instrument air gas seal should be used in the vapor space above the tank, to prevent the sulfuric acid stored there from coming into contact with air and absorbing moisture, which could reduce its concentration and increase the corrosion rate.
