What length does the heat exchanger shell length refer to?

For example, in the case of fixed tube sheets with tube boxes at both ends, is it the dimension between the end faces of the two tube sheets of the shell, or the dimension of the shell-side cylinder, or the dimension between the centerlines of the tube box welds, or something else?

Apart from performing precise calculations, it is common to simply use the distance between the end faces of the tube sheet, thereby eliminating the influence of the tube sheet thickness.
