Dear teachers, regarding the Type D joints in the figure where stainless steel forged pipes are inserted into composite plates, the current evaluation method involves assessing both the base material joint and the corrosion-resistant surfacing. I have some doubts regarding the form of assessment for the surfacing: in Figure 1, the layer that serves as the base for the Type D joint is the A302 weld metal formed between different steel types. When using surfacing assessment to evaluate the transition layer and the coating layer in such joints, the base material used in typical surfacing assessment test pieces is Q345R, which does not correspond to the A302 weld metal that actually functions as the base layer in the product. How should this situation be handled when using surfacing assessment to cover the base material type? Similarly, in projects that involve surfacing welding, how is the base material of the welder’s test plates used to cover the dissimilar steel joints in the base layer? May I ask whether, whether for evaluation or the selection of welder candidates, it is necessary to use a test plate structure similar to that in Figure 2 – one in which dissimilar steel plates are welded together and then stainless steel is cladded on top?
Changing the material of the substrate is a matter that requires re-evaluation; I think you need to use two types – one with a carbon steel substrate and the other with a stainless steel substrate. For the welder’s exam, only surfacing welding is required
