Dear experts, our company is about to renew the certification for its pressure vessel designs (including both conventional designs and SAD designs). The review body this time is the China Machinery Industry Federation. Has anyone experienced this type of certification renewal? What are the requirements for such renewals? (Are heat exchangers and spherical tanks required to be reviewed?) Do design professionals at all levels need to take an online exam?

If an approval for the design of a fixed-pressure vessel is sought separately, the design documents must include a high-pressure vessel with a diameter of 2 meters or more, a tower whose wall thickness is determined by wind loads, a heat exchanger, a reactor, and a spherical tank. I don’t know about the analysis design. You can search for TSG 07 and the Detailed Rules for the Evaluation of Pressure Vessel Design Licensing. Only the computer-based exams need to be reviewed and approved; the rules require a closed-book format, but it should be possible to consult books. It’s sufficient to carry out a proper review by the examination committee. All those taking the computer-based exams are gathered in one room, so take them to another room. The exam platform doesn’t use camera surveillance either, at least not last year. Both proofreading and design involve the test papers brought by the review panel.

We have never built a sphere tank before; do we still need to prepare a set of trial design documents? Do approvers also need approval certificates (some have S1, S2, while others have S1, S2, S3), and is a computer-based test required as well?

As long as an application is submitted for a design permit for fixed pressure vessels on an individual basis (including renewal), all those types of vessels are required; those without prior experience can carry out trial designs； If it is an approval certificate issued by the Competence Assessment Committee, it is usually possible to avoid taking an online exam; for those issued by other organizations, it’s not clear – it depends on whether the evaluation panel approves it, as this authority has been delegated by the regulatory authority to the evaluation units.
Everything mentioned above is correct; the key is to get in touch with the review team leader as soon as possible and ask them carefully – we have been part of their review teams on multiple occasions
