The gland is meant to be fitted by the purchaser; only a plastic plug is included at the time of manufacturing. Many manufacturers use this approach, and metal glands should be an optional option, available in materials such as stainless steel, copper, or nickel-plated copper. The prices vary, and the choice can be left to the user, who can also fit them themselves. Of course, if it has already been installed at a workstation in an explosion-proof area without a qualified Gran unit, that’s another matter. There’s no need to blame the people in charge of safety inspections excessively; they may not be aware of the specific requirements regarding configuration and procurement. If I were in charge of this project at the factory, I would also skip purchasing special flanges for the instruments, and instead buy flanges of different materials and specifications in bulk, which would help save some money. Or the factory already has pre-configured gland heads.
To the point. Plastic plugs are used to prevent the threads of explosion-proof electrical equipment from being damaged during manufacturing, as well as to stop dust and other debris from entering. They serve as temporary protective elements and cannot replace the specialized metal seals and fasteners with explosion-proof properties that are produced by the manufacturers. If installed in workstations located in explosion-proof areas, the plastic plugs and plastic fasteners may not have sufficient strength; in the event of a flash explosion, these plugs and fasteners could be ejected like bullets, and the consequences if they hit a person are obvious. If flames burst out, they could cause a secondary explosion upon encountering flammable gases.
Many years ago, when a natural gas compressor in a company started up, flammable gases leaking from around it entered the explosion-proof control cabinet of the compressor along with air through a damaged plastic plug, causing an explosion inside the explosion-proof chamber; panels were ejected, resulting in the death of one employee on the spot.
The common feature of flameproof electrical equipment is that the parts that may generate sparks under normal operation or in emergency conditions are placed within one or several enclosures. In addition to separating the sparks and arcs inside from the explosive gases in the surrounding environment, the connections between the various components within this enclosure must not only meet certain structural dimension requirements but also possess adequate structural strength. When the explosive gas mixture inside the shell is ignited by sparks or arcs within it, the shell will not be destroyed, nor will it cause the explosive gas mixture in the surrounding environment to ignite through the connection gaps. An electrical equipment enclosure that can withstand the explosion pressure of internal explosive gas mixtures and prevent the spread of an internal explosion to the explosive mixtures surrounding the enclosure is called an explosion-proof enclosure. Electrical equipment with an explosion-proof enclosure is called an explosion-proof electrical device. The practice of using plastic plugs and fasteners to seal redundant holes by this company **reduces the explosion resistance of flame-proof electrical equipment, and it is very likely to cause the flame-proof function to fail. Flames or dangerous flame products can pass through the plastic plugs, igniting the explosive gases outside and triggering a secondary explosion that results in severe casualties and property damage.
In accordance with Article 12 of the \"Interim Standards for Identifying Major Potential Hazards in Production Safety Incidents in Chemical and Hazardous Chemicals Enterprises,\" chemical and hazardous chemicals enterprises that have areas where flammable and toxic gases may leak must install detection and alarm devices in accordance with the specified standards. The selection, installation, and use of electrical equipment in explosion-proof areas must also comply with relevant requirements; failure to do so shall be considered a major potential hazard.
