Recently, the first batch of this type of steel, manufactured by Tangsteel Company under Hebei Iron and Steel Group, was produced. This product features high strength and high toughness, as well as significantly improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. It will be used in the manufacturing of single and composite structural components for passenger vehicle body panels, helping to meet the demands for vehicle lightweighting while also enhancing the safety performance of vehicles. Hydrogen embrittlement generally refers to the phenomenon where hydrogen incorporated during the solidification of metal gathers at metal defects to form hydrogen molecules, generating significant internal pressure that causes cracks in the metal. When the strength of hot-rolled steel exceeds 1.5 GPa, hydrogen embrittlement becomes more apparent, turning into a common issue in the industry. Tangsteel focuses on the potential steel demand driven by industry development, maintains close ties with the market and its customers, makes full use of its technical advantages, and enhances its ability to develop high-end customers as well as to research and develop new high-end products. To address these common industry challenges, during the production of 2GPa super hydrogen embrittlement-resistant hot-rolled steel, Tangsteel’s production technology team focused on optimizing the production process. They carried out experimental improvements in key stages such as composition control, hot rolling, coiling, and continuous cooling, strengthened oversight of the entire production process, and strictly controlled process parameters. By innovating in niobium micro-alloying techniques, they added niobium elements during the production of hot-rolled steel, thereby optimizing the microstructure of the steel and significantly enhancing its resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, while ensuring that other properties of the product met customer requirements.
