I have a 1,200 square meter shell-and-tube heat exchanger that is currently unused. My company has a process that requires heat exchange: cold water needs to be heated, and hot water needs to be cooled. The temperature of the cold water is around 25–28°C, while that of the hot water is approximately 70–80°C. The flow rate of the cold water can be set at around 300 m3/h, and the flow rate of the hot water can be set at around 150–200 m3/h. I want the temperature of the heated cold water to be above 35°C, with no upper limit. I want to lower the temperature of the hot water to 20°C or even lower. How should I design this process?
No process can bring it down to 20°C.
It can drop down to around 30°C at the lowest. To drop it to 20°C or lower, equipment is required.

Don’t lower it. I think using the two types of water alternately will almost meet your requirements
You can try making a perpetual motion machine.
Just use the hot water as if it were cold water for heat exchange – why go through the extra step of heat exchange? It’s unnecessary. You’re not in tech, are you?
Is it the original poster who is mistaken? There is a fundamental difference between lowering the temperature of hot water by 20°C and reducing it to 20°C.
