The question is about the difference between 300mm and 375mm in the diagram. I didn’t notice such a case; what I see most often are those with left-right flow, while this one seems to have up-down flow. What special situations arise with up-and-down recirculation? That is, in the presence of vaporization, there will be gas resistance at the bottom, but not at the top. Thus, a design was developed in which the flow area at the bottom is larger, while the flow area at the top is smaller.

It is obvious that this piping is asymmetrical from top to bottom. The upper half does not have tubes all over it, while the lower half does. When the medium on the shell side passes through the openings in the baffle plates, it is necessary to ensure that the flow area of these openings in the upper and lower halves is equal. Therefore, the cutting areas of the baffle plates in the lower half, where there are many tubes, need to be larger, as those tubes occupy a significant amount of the flow area. It’s not the upper half filled with tubes; some area remains empty since they haven’t been installed yet, so the area that needs to be cut by the baffle is relatively small.
