In winter, in traditional coil-type closed cooling towers, when there is no heat load, the circulating water in the pipes and the spray water freeze due to the low ambient temperature. This causes expansion of the pipes in the heat exchange and spraying systems, leading to damage and loss of functionality, which in turn affects the normal operation of production. Northern users must take practical measures to ensure the proper operation of the closed tower when using it in winter. Generally, the following approach is taken: 1. First, choose antifreeze to add – based on the environmental temperature in the area of use, and according to the performance parameters of the antifreeze, prepare an antifreeze suitable for the user’s system. Note: Ethylene glycol is a colorless, slightly viscous liquid with a boiling point of 197.4°C and a freezing point of -11.5°C; it can be mixed with water in any proportion. After mixing, the freezing point drops significantly due to the change in the vapor pressure of the cooling water. However, ethylene glycol antifreeze tends to produce acidic substances during use, which can corrode metals; therefore, appropriate amounts of disodium hydrogen phosphate are added to prevent corrosion. Furthermore, at low temperatures, ethylene glycol has a high viscosity, which increases resistance and accordingly reduces the flow rate of the medium. 2. In frozen areas during winter, for systems that are not suitable for the use of antifreeze, it is necessary to drain the water immediately after shutting down the system when operating in winter; otherwise, pipe bursts will inevitably occur. 3. An Ecomic detachable plate-type closed tower is used; this tower has anti-freezing capabilities, preventing pipe rupture in case of freezing, thus avoiding equipment damage, and it can be used again after the ice melts.
