I would like to ask the experts: why is a heat meter installed on the return water side of the primary side, while a flow meter is installed on the supply water side of the secondary side? It was mentioned in the standards, but no further explanation was given; I’d like to understand why. Thank you everyone!
In a heat exchange unit, the primary side refers to the heat source side (such as a boiler), while the secondary side refers to the end-user side (such as a heating system). Thermometers are installed on the primary side return water mainly because it is relatively easy to calculate and measure heat, and the flow rate on the primary side is fairly stable; therefore, thermometers are suitable for such measurements. Flow meters are installed on the secondary side supply line mainly because the flow rate there varies considerably, and calculating the heat amount is complex; by using flow meters, it is possible to measure the flow rate more accurately, thereby enabling better control of the operation of the heating system. In short, such a setup can achieve better energy balance and control. .
