On a four-meter-high steel beam, a mechanical unit equipped with a strong-magnet chassis is crawling smoothly along the surface of the steel structure. The silver-gray body was firmly attached to the vertical steel column, while the six-axis robotic arm moved flexibly to the welding position; amid the splashing weld sparks, a uniform weld seam gradually took shape. Accelerating the transition from laboratory concepts to practical applications, the development of this high-altitude welding robot manufactured in Chengdu is a vivid example of the city’s efforts to create a first-class business environment. An innovation ecosystem built through scenario identification, collaboration between the government and private sectors, and policy support provides the ideal conditions for the transformation of high-tech technologies, thus speeding up the adoption of advanced technologies. In the field of steel structure construction, high-altitude welding tasks have always faced many challenging problems. From a safety perspective, workers need to carry out their tasks at heights; not only is the workload heavy, but they are also constantly exposed to risks such as falls, burns from high temperatures, and exposure to dust and fumes. In terms of efficiency, traditional manual welding is significantly affected by factors such as weather and worker fatigue, making it difficult to control the progress of work. This issue is particularly pronounced in large-scale projects with tight deadlines, where the low efficiency of manual welding becomes even more evident. In terms of quality, manual operation lacks stability, making it difficult to ensure consistency in welds; welding defects are likely to occur, leading to issues such as rework. Recently, the relevant departments in Chengdu held a event to showcase innovative applications, enabling precise matching of products in various fields such as intelligent construction, artificial intelligence, and green low-carbon development. In the field of \"construction robots,\" China Fifth Metallurgical Group has focused on construction sites. Addressing the issues of high safety risks, low efficiency, and unstable quality associated with high-altitude welding of steel structures, the group launched a specialized project titled \"Research and Development of Robots for High-Altitude Welding of Steel Structures on Construction Sites\" through a competitive bidding process, and carried out corresponding research and applications to resolve these long-standing problems in the industry, ensure the \"inherent safety\" of high-altitude welding of steel structures at construction sites, and improve welding efficiency and quality. To date, this robot has achieved key technological breakthroughs in various areas. In terms of stability for autonomous movement at high altitudes, it uses a wall-climbing chassis equipped with strong magnetic adsorption devices as the moving component of the robot, enabling it to handle complex working conditions such as high temperatures, oil contamination, and metal splashes with ease. It is also capable of moving vertically, horizontally, and in other directions on the surface of steel structures, boasting excellent mobility and control capabilities; its maximum load capacity is 50 kilograms.
Intelligent welding precision control is also one of its highlights. The robot is equipped with a 3D vision camera, enabling a visual precision of ±0.5mm. Through the independently developed welding expert system, process parameters are automatically matched using fuzzy recognition algorithms, and the database can be expanded based on welding results, thereby improving adaptability to complex welds. Furthermore, the online welding quality monitoring system plays a crucial role in ensuring welding quality. It is capable of identifying the types and locations of weld defects in real time, enabling online monitoring of welding quality as well as the recording, feedback, and tracking of such quality data. In practical application scenarios, this robot has achieved remarkable results. In terms of improved efficiency, compared to manual welding, robots can increase the welding speed by over 50%, enabling continuous operation. In terms of safety improvements, workers are freed from high-risk environments, ensuring the \"inherent safety\" of high-altitude welding of steel structures. In terms of quality improvement, the weld qualification rate increased from 85% for manual welding to 98%, with the consistency error of welding parameters kept within ±3%.
