Is graphite suitable for use with dichloroethane and HCl gases?
Yes, graphite is corrosion-resistant and suitable for this purpose. However, some graphite heat exchangers have PP welds on both sides, and dichloroethane can dissolve PP; it’s important to ask the heat exchanger manufacturer whether there are any other materials used in addition to graphite
Graphite material refers to graphite components impregnated with resin in the parts through which the material flows, and in principle, there is no problem with this. However, if it is used as an evaporator (with secondary steam in the shell side), attention must be paid to corrosion protection of the shell side.

Forgot to mention the conditions: tube process – dichloroethane and hydrogen chloride gases, with a small amount of water vapor; pressure < 20 kPa, temperature 0–120 degrees; Shell side: Circulating water/calcium chloride brine, pressure < 0.4 MPa, temperature 25/–20 degrees

What worries me is that dichloroethane can dissolve and corrode graphite resin – is there any graphite resin that is resistant to dichloroethane corrosion? Engineer Wang

Graphite heat exchangers are widely used in the PVC industry, with media including hydrogen chloride, acetylene, vinyl chloride monomer, polyvinyl chloride, hydrochloric acid, and others additives and catalysts ; When applied to glycerol-based epichlorohydrin production plants, the media include: hydrogen chloride, glycerol, dichloropropanol, epichlorohydrin, hydrochloric acid, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorous acid… etc ; When used in silicone devices, the media include: hydrogen chloride, chloromethane, dichloromethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, siloxanes, various organic solvents, and additives ; The media commonly used in applications in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, and fine chemical industries include: hydrogen chloride, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, benzene, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, m-dichlorobenzene, dichloromethane, dichloroethane, tetrachloroethane, isopropanol, pentanol, propylene, butylene, styrene, ethylbenzene, pentaerythritol, alkylsulfonyl chlorides… etc. Graphite heat exchangers are used with various process media mentioned above, and that is precisely their value.
