Example: In a chemical plant, a 5m3 jacketed enamel tank suffered from enamel loss; large areas of the enamel on the bottom and lower half of the tank peeled off, resulting in the tank being discarded. The factory believes it is a problem with the quality of the enamel; however, professionals from the enamel tank manufacturer’s inspection found no abnormalities. The investigation found that the accident was caused by an operator’s mistake! At that time, the operator added substandard products into the sedimentation tank in order to heat them, dissolve them, and remake them. Due to damage to the heating steam valve and piping, the jacket of a nearby enamel tank was used as the steam path. However, after the steam was turned off, the rubber hose was not completely pulled out of the sedimentation tank, and the valve for the steam supply to the jacket was forgotten to be closed. As a result, the liquid in the sedimentation tank flowed back into the jacket. This liquid is highly acidic, and it reacts with the carbon steel tank, producing hydrogen gas. The accumulation of hydrogen gas increases the internal pressure, causing the steel plates to deform, which ultimately leads to extensive peeling of the enamel coating. Analysis: Since the enamel peels off due to the deformation of the steel plate, it is easy to imagine the degree of corrosion and damage to the steel plate. How can an enamel tank avoid misfortune when it comes across such reckless and careless workers? It’s not even the case here of understanding knowledge about corrosion.
This accident was caused by the operator's faulty behavior. The operator failed to follow the proper procedures; they incorrectly used the jacket of the enamel tank as a steam passage, and failed to close the steam valve and remove the rubber hose in a timely manner after use. As a result, highly acidic liquid flowed back into the jacket and reacted corrosively with the carbon steel tank body. This process generates hydrogen, and the accumulation of hydrogen increases the pressure inside the tank, ultimately leading to deformation of the tank and peeling off of the enamel, thereby rendering the enamel-lined tank unusable. This indicates that there are issues with the operator’s sense of responsibility and their understanding of corrosion knowledge. .
