Let’s discuss the basic requirements for preparing painting process specifications. Regarding the preparation of such specifications, they are generally drafted in the form of applicable technical documents or process cards; however, there is currently no unified standard for how to do this. It must be formulated flexibly in line with the technical level of specific production conditions; the process specifications must be technical documents that feature advanced technology, are reasonable, and capable of guiding production. Therefore, when preparing the painting process specifications, the following information should be understood: (1) The properties and uses of the paint. In coating products, each type has its own specific properties as well as general advantages and disadvantages. During the coating process, when these advantages and disadvantages conflict with one another, it is necessary to make use of the strengths and avoid the weaknesses, so that the resulting cured coating can meet the required standards as much as possible. This information can be obtained from the product manuals, instruction sheets, and other technical documents related to the coating products. Of course, this is only a general explanation and cannot serve as the sole basis for selecting coating products; in practical applications, scientific experiments must be conducted based on the object to be coated and the required specifications. (2) Purpose of coating and type of coating film. Depending on the purpose of coating, coatings can generally be divided into two main categories: decorative coatings and protective coatings. From the perspective of visual decoration, decorative coatings are evaluated based on criteria such as a smooth and even surface, high gloss, good fullness, excellent weather resistance, and durability. According to these principles, decorative coatings are divided into three grades, each with different quality requirements, manufacturing processes, and applicable surfaces. Protective coatings are primarily used to safeguard the coated surface from corrosion in various environments and media. Such coatings do not need to have decorative properties; examples of this type of coating include those that offer resistance to chemical atmospheres, acids and alkalis, solvents, wear, and electrical insulation. (3) Possibilities of coating conditions. If a certain painting method is to be used, factors such as the availability of painting equipment and other necessary conditions, whether the object to be painted is suitable for it, the type of paint and its accompanying materials, as well as costs, are all important considerations when preparing the painting procedure. (4) The technical level of the coating industry. It is necessary to have a certain understanding of the technical level achieved in coating similar products as well as their development trends, in order to ensure that the formulated coating process procedures are technically advanced and feasible, thereby providing proper guidance and promotion for the development of production technologies. With an understanding of the aforementioned aspects, one can proceed to develop a painting process specification for a particular product. When formulating this specification, it is important to draw on collective wisdom by first creating a draft; after thorough discussion, it should be revised and improved through practice. Once finalized, it must be approved by the technical management department before it can be put into effect.
