A large amount of steel is required in the design of steel structure projects, but if the steel used during construction rusts extensively, its service life will be significantly shortened. When painting steel structures, the metal surface is first rust-removed. The conventional methods for rust removal are as follows: 1. Acid washing for rust removal – this involves immersing the steel components to be painted in an acid bath, using acid to remove oil and rust from the surface of those components. The pickling process is also efficient and provides thorough rust removal; however, after pickling, the components must be rinsed with hot water or clean water, as any remaining acid will cause further rusting of the components. 2. Manual rust removal involves using simple tools such as scrapers, grinding wheels, sandpaper, and wire brushes to remove rust from steel components. This method is inefficient, has poor working conditions, and does not remove rust thoroughly. 3. Sandblasting for rust removal is a method that utilizes the pressure of compressed air to continuously bombard the surface of steel components with quartz sand or iron sand, thereby removing rust, oil, and other impurities from the surface of the steel and revealing the natural color of the metal. This method is efficient and provides thorough rust removal; it is a relatively advanced rust removal technique.
There are mainly three common methods for rust removal in steel structures: 1. Acid cleaning for rust removal: Characteristics: High efficiency and thorough rust removal. Applicable: Suitable for components with large scale and simple rules. Note: After pickling, any residual acid must be thoroughly washed off; otherwise, it may lead to more severe corrosion. 2. Manual rust removal: Characteristics: Simple tools are used (sandpaper, wire brushes, scrapers, etc.), but it requires a lot of physical effort, has low efficiency, and the quality is difficult to ensure; it is usually suitable only for treating small areas or irregular components. 3. Sandblasting for rust removal: Features: Compressed air is used to blast quartz sand or iron sand at the surface of steel, enabling efficient and thorough rust removal. This method can effectively improve the quality and lifespan of coatings on steel structures, and it represents a relatively advanced rust removal technique. In actual engineering practice, the appropriate rust removal method or a combination of multiple methods should be selected based on specific circumstances (such as component dimensions, shape, degree of corrosion, cost budget, etc.). .
