The acidic substances produced by microorganisms can erode the walls of the water tank. Although the main deck is not as susceptible to corrosion as the ballast tanks and cargo holds, corrosion can still occur there. Due to the combined effect of salty air and seawater, the general environment on board is highly corrosive. Furthermore, the entire main deck, including all the pipes and supports installed on it, is covered every night by salty dew containing chloride ions that cause corrosion. Then, the heat during the day raises the temperature, increasing the corrosion capacity further.
