When spraying inorganic zinc silicate, it’s crucial to form a continuous film in one go; if the coating is too thin, it won’t provide adequate coverage, while an overly thick coating may lead to cracking. The thickness of the sprayed coating should not exceed 125 UM, or it may be determined according to the data provided by the paint manufacturer. Zinc powder is generated during spraying; therefore, assistance is needed to use compressed air to blow away the zinc powder that lands on the surface, thereby preventing the formation of an uneven coating. It is recommended to pre-coat those areas that are difficult to spray. After spraying is complete, when the paint starts to change color (turn darker), water should be applied, or the humidity in the surrounding area should be increased to over 80%. Under normal conditions, at a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, the curing time is 2 days, during which water should be applied every 2 hours. Because the curing of inorganic zinc requires water vapor in the atmosphere. After applying inorganic zinc silicate paint, if a sealing coat is needed, the entire painted surface should be sanded before applying the sealing coat; generally, 120-grit sandpaper is used to remove any loose zinc particles. For the sealing coat, the mixing ratio is paint:thinner = 1:1. The idea is that once the inorganic zinc silicate treatment is completed, there will be a MEK test. Sometimes, to deceive the shipowner, unexperienced technical staff may provide you with special types of fabric that do not produce zinc powder no matter how much you wipe them; therefore, it is recommended that you bring your own fabric.
