The Mystery of the “Role” of the Ordinary Topcoat in Heavy-Duty Anti-Corrosion Coatings – Original Article by Coating Microscopy, Coating Microscopy, January 28, 2026, 21:02, Shanghai. Read the full article. In the previous issue, we examined in detail the intermediate coat, which acts as a crucial link between other layers and is essential for creating a robust protective layer. But the coating on the outermost layer not only needs to provide a final barrier; it also has to withstand exposure to sunlight and rain, resist chemical erosion, and determine the appearance and color of the structure – this is the role of the topcoat. Today, we focus on the three main types of \"standard topcoats\" in heavy-duty anti-corrosion systems: alkyd coatings, chlorinated rubber coatings, and acrylic coatings. Although they are gradually being replaced by new materials in high-performance applications, they remain a reliable and cost-effective choice in many situations. I. Classic veterans: Alkyd coatings. Alkyd resin coatings were the pioneers among synthetic resin coatings used by humans, and they remained the dominant choice in the field of corrosion protection for a long time. It is formed by the esterification of polyols, polyacids, and vegetable oils (or their fatty acids), and the key to its properties lies in the oil content (fatty acid content). Why was it once mainstream? Compared to early oil-based paints, alkyd coatings have seen a significant improvement in drying time, adhesion, and weather resistance, while also having a relatively lower cost. Why gradually step back? Slow drying: It relies on oxygen-induced oxidative polymerization, resulting in long times for surface drying and full curing, which affects construction efficiency. Performance limitations: Poor water resistance and chemical resistance; moderate hardness and wear resistance; prone to powdering and yellowing. Thick coating limitation: A single coating cannot be too thick, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements for thick coatings in modern heavy-duty anti-corrosion applications. Current application: Primarily used for the maintenance of outdoor steel structures in environments with low corrosivity (C2-C3), where decorative requirements are moderate and budget is a constraint.
II. The once dominant option: Chlorinated rubber coatings. These coatings are produced by chlorinating natural rubber, and during the mid to late 20th century they were the standard topcoat choice in fields requiring high-level corrosion protection, such as containers, ships, and steel structures. The once-great \"all-rounder\": Impermeable \"armor\" – with a dense molecular structure that results in extremely low permeability to water vapor and oxygen; it boasts excellent water resistance and salt spray resistance. Chemical “inertness”: excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and salts. Fast construction: physical drying type, fast surface drying time, can be applied at low temperatures, excellent adhesion between layers, with no limit on the maximum interval before repainting. Why does prosperity lead to decline? Environmental drawbacks: Carbon tetrachloride is used in traditional production, damaging the ozone layer; its use is restricted or banned worldwide. Temperature resistance weakness: Thermoplastic resins tend to soften and decompose at high temperatures (>60-70°C). Weak point in weather resistance: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the paint film to yellow severely, affecting its aesthetic appearance. Current status: It is still used in areas where environmental regulations permit it, or in certain repair markets, but it has been largely replaced by products with better performance or lower environmental impact.
III. Mainstream Innovations: Acrylic Coatings. With the limitations associated with chlorinated rubbers, acrylic coatings have quickly become one of the mainstream topcoats, thanks to their similar fast-drying properties and superior weather resistance; they are widely used, especially in the container manufacturing industry. Performance advantages: A natural \"anti-aging\" expert – its main chain consists of stable carbon-carbon bonds, giving it high resistance to ultraviolet rays, heat, and chemicals; its ability to retain brightness and color far exceeds that of alkyd resins and chlorinated rubbers. Flexible “customizability”: By adjusting monomers and functional groups, it can be made into thermoplastic or thermosetting types to meet various requirements. Construction-friendly: The thermoplastic acrylic topcoat dries quickly, eliminates the need for waiting periods between coats, and provides a wide application window. Not perfect: Thermoplastic acrylic coatings are sensitive to temperature (tendency to stick again at high temperatures), and their long-term protective performance remains insufficient in some extreme corrosive environments (such as high salt mist or strong chemical agents). Current application: It is one of the most commonly used ordinary topcoats in medium-corrosion environments (C3-C4), especially in construction projects where maintaining the appearance and ensuring construction efficiency are of key importance.
